Why Blockchain Is Key To a More Accountable Administration?

By Sumedha Bose

If you have read Weber’s ideas on bureacracy and corruption, you are well aware that most administrations are susceptible to malpractice. Documents, data, statistics – both of national and international interest, make up for the most valuable assets of any administration.

But as long as leaders are left to their own devices, and assured significant control over these assets, the scope for any wrongdoing increases tenfold. No administration in the world can claim that it is completely spot-free. There is the problem of corruption, nepotism. security breaches in most administrative structures across the world be it in the United States of America or the People’s Republic of China.

So is there a technology that can restrict and limit the scope of administrative malpractice, in the governance system? Why yes! There exists one such technology that can police and clean up the current system, by ridding it of its vulnerabilities.

Blockchain technology, dangerous for traditionalism, and the hope for a more modernized, transparent and efficient system. Imagine a distant time in the future, where accountability and transparency form the bedrock of governance, and no bureacrat is capable of tampering facts or spewing lies.

The political institutions of a country, a state run media house, or giant corporations that form the 1%, sometimes possess inscrutable authority. Nobody, not even God should have that much power over information. To ensure that this power is kept in check, blockchain technology can be integrated in such systems.

The records meant to be controlled by these institutions, could be made accessible to all, independent, and tamper proof. Blockchain accountability can help tremendously in ensuring that information never disappears from the public eye.

If you have read Geoge Orwell’s ‘1984’, you are well aware that control over information can ultimately lead to having control over the minds and thoughts of the citizens. Nobody should be allowed to wield the kind of power that the ‘Party’ did, or else we could have a similar dystopian, regressive society in the near future.
