Canadian City Collaborated With Coinberry To Allow Residents To Pay Municipal Taxes In Crypto

Coinberry, a Canadian digital currency platform, has partnered with the city of Richmond Hill in order to provide the residents with an option of paying their municipal taxes in Bitcoin.

On July 10, Richmond Hill’s City Council had voted in favour of the agreement, ensuring for the citizens and businesses of the region, a provision of paying their property taxes in Bitcoin. This collaboration makes Richmond Hill the first city and second Canadian municipality to provide residents with such an option.

Joe Di Paola, Richmond Hill’s Deputy Mayor, had moved the motion before the City Council and commented that cryptocurrencies will get more popular with time, specifically with millennials. He said,

“Our Council was aware of Coinberry’s successful implementation of a digital currency payment service with the Town of Innisfil, and since there was no cost and no risk to the City of Richmond Hill to do the same, it made the decision that much easier for us.”

The latest partnership marks Coinberry’s second municipal partnership in less than six months. Some time ago, Innisfil, a town outside Toronto, became the first Canadian town to accept Bitcoin for tax payments.

However, the development of this provision is still in process, and the municipal staff will be required to report back on the workability of the execution of Coinberry’s technology for other payment methods in the city, by 30 September 2019.

Andrei Poliakov, CEO and Co-Founder of Coinberry, expressed his excitement about the recent partnership. He said,

“We are very happy to be entering into a partnership with our second Canadian Municipality. Leaders of government and enterprise organizations are realizing that, with the right partners, they can innovate with blockchain and digital currencies. We’re pleased to be working on additional innovative solutions with leading enterprise and municipal partners, and have a number of very exciting initiatives we will be announcing over the next several months.”
