Japan’s GMO Internet Inc. To Launch In-Game Bitcoin Rewards
GMO Internet Inc., the Japanese internet giant, announced their forthcoming involvement plans with cryptocurrencies yesterday. GMO will be debuting their latest Bitcoin-based application for in-game rewards in August, beginning with the real-time battle video game Whimsical War.
CryptoChips, the currently Bitcoin-based application, acts as a medium to reward players for achieving certain goals, and will eventually launch with multi-cryptocurrency support.
“GMO Internet […] has developed ‘CryptoChips by GMO’ that enables distribution of cryptocurrency as remuneration within the game application, and will offer it through a group company starting in August 2018,” an accompanying press release confirms, adding:
“CryptoChips can be mounted on the game application and allows players to receive cryptocurrency as remuneration within the game – like a ‘secret pocket money’ – depending on the players’ rankings or when players have achieved missions or acquired items.”
The move is not the first involvement with cryptocurrency for the company. GMO already runs its own exchange, large-scale mining operation and even pays a portion of staff salaries in Bitcoin.
Following January’s $530m hack of fellow Japanese crypto exchange Coincheck, the company’s exchange promised to improve data security, after regulators found its setup lacking during cross-industry inspections in March.
