Is There Any Scope of Decentralized World Wide Web?

By Kapil Gauhar

It comes as no surprise that decentralised web could be a chance to take away the control of our data back from the tech firms in our own hands.

The story that broke last year in September that Google would cooperate with Chinese authorities for running a censored version of its search engine, which is something that the tech giant has neither confirmed nor refused, had ironic timing. The world wants a new and better web where the entire planet’s population can freely communicate with no need to rely on big firms that amass our data for profit and what makes it easier for the governments to conduct surveillance.

What is DWeb or Decentralised Web?

It is supposed to be as the web you know but with no centralised operators. In the early days of the World Wide Web, you directly connected with your friends via desktop computers that talked to each other.

But, with the advent of Web 2.0, we started communicating with each other and share information via centralised services offered by big firms like Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Amazon.

The decentralised world wide web or DWeb is about re-decentralising the things so that we may not rely on these intermediaries to connect us. Rather, users keep control of their own data and connect, interact and exchange messages directly with their dear and near ones in their network.

Why Need an Alternative?

With the current web, user data concentrated in the hands of a centralised system creates a risk that our data may be hacked. Also, it makes it easier for governments to conduct surveillance to impose censorship. In case any of these centralised entities close their shops, then your data and connections are lost all along.

The DWeb is about giving people a choice that is decentralisation focused and not creepy with the same services. It claims to offer control and privacy, and things can’t disappear just like that because someone decides they should. On Decentralized Web, it would be difficult for the Chinese government to block a site it did not like since the information can come from other places.

How Does the Decentralized Web Work?

There are majorly two differences in how DWeb works in comparison with the World Wide Web.

First, there’s this P2P connectivity, where your system not just requests services but also offers them.

Second, how information is stored and then retrieved is all different. Currently, we use HTTP/https links to identify information on the web.

By contrast, DWeb (Decentralized Web) protocols use links which identify information depending on its content.

Is There Something to Do with “Blockchain”?

Blockchain is the secure and encrypted technology that digital currencies runoff. It offers a decentralised public digital ledger of transaction that securely tracks ownership in an environment without trust. While the first applications of blockchain were for the cryptocurrency transactions, that same technology is now exploring further application in the development of a Decentralised Web or DWeb that incorporates recording the movement of the data, registering user names and even data storage.
