Hamas Again Appeals For Bitcoin Donation

By Prashant Jha

Hamas, an extremist group which is considered to be a terrorist organization by the United States and other European nations has been running its operations on the Gaza border, and often engage with the Israeli army over the claims of Palestine.

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, had earlier in January asked its supporters to donate them money through Bitcoin, in order to continue their rebellion. Now, the Al-Qassam brigades have made the same appeal for its “Palestinian resistance” programme.

The official website of Hamas direct users to a dedicated page made for the donations in the name of “Support the Resistance” campaign. The statement released by the group claims that the supporters of the group have a duty to support jihad because Jerusalem is an integral part of the Islamic faith and Palestine must be a part of it.

Hamas Earlier Attempts to Get Donation in Bitcoin

In January this year, Hamas has asked for funds from its supporters in Bitcoin since the governments have banned and strictly asked the banks to stop any kind of aid to the extremist group, creating financial isolation for the group.

In the January appeal, the spokesperson of  Al-Qassam Brigades simply asked for Bitcoin donations and said that the mechanism for sending the funds would be explained on a later date. It seems the group has finally got hold of the technology to create a Bitcoin payment portal on its platform.

Interestingly, Egypt’s Grand Mufti has declared the use of Bitcoin and any activity related to cryptocurrencies as unlawful in accordance with the Islamic Sharia law.

Final Thoughts

The sudden interest of terrorist organization like Hamas in Bitcoin can be concerning to the authorities and regulatory bodies who have always held this chip of illegal use against the mass adoption of cryptocurrencies.

It is to be seen whether the Israeli government or the governments fighting against these organizations would take necessary steps to ensure that these organizations remain financially isolated.
