AMD CEO Lisa Su Talks Ray Tracing

American multinational semiconductor company, AMD recently concluded its CES 2019 press conference. The Santa Clara-based company’s Chief Executive Officer, Lisa Su, talked about the company’s plans for Ray Tracing technology at the Q&A session with the press.

During the Q&A session, Lisa Su highlighted the importance of the specialised rendering technique called Ray Tracing to AMD. Yet at the same time, she also made it clear that presently most games seem to be lacking the software support.

Ray Tracing is the technique of rendering in computer graphics which produces an image by the process of tracing the path of light as pixels in an image plane. The path of light simulates the effects of its encounters with digital objects.

Notably, Su has not elaborated on any information that AMD has regarding the Ray Tracing technology, and she has not mentioned any window for discussion on it in the future. Su explained,

“I would say that we are deep into development and that development is concurrent between hardware and software. And so for us, it’s, you know, what is the consumer going to see? The consumer doesn’t see a lot of benefits today because the other parts of the ecosystem are not ready. I think by the time we talk more about ray tracing, the consumers will see that.”

Interestingly, American technology company NVIDIA has in another news revealed its settlement with the VESA Adaptive Sync Standard. It will facilitate the support of G-SYNC on displays. The standard comes from AMD’s FreeSync technology. As per AMD CEO Lisa Su, the company made the right choice with FreeSync many years ago. She said,

“Look, we knew FreeSync was the right answer. We’ve known FreeSync was the right answer for a couple of years. The fact that others have decided that FreeSync is the right answer, I think, says that we made the right choice a few years ago.”

As per news reports, the driver update which will facilitate the integration of G-SYNC on Adaptive Sync Displays will be launched on January 15, 2019.
